In this chapter the researcher wants to describe about background of the problem, identification of the problem, limitation of the problem, formulation of the problem, objective of the research, significance of the research, hypothesis of study, and definition of key terms.
- Background of The Problem
In language components are vocabulary, structure and pronunciation. Vocabulary is one of the language components besides pronunciation and grammar. Students cannot say or write anything in English without knowing English vocabulary. Scott Thornburg quoting the linguist David Wilkins who summed up the importance vocabulary learning points out, “Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”
From this statement, it could be understood that vocabulary is one of the items that has to be mastered by the students in learning English, because no one can speak English if they have limited vocabulary and without a proportional amount of vocabulary anyone will get trouble in her reading, listening, speaking, writing.
In addition definition is stated by Richards (2002:255) “ Vocabulary is a core component of language proficiency and provides much of the basis for how well learners speak, listen, read and write.” Therefore develop learners’ progress in understanding English, learners should keep on learning new vocabulary items every day. It means that the development of a rich vocabulary is an important element in the acquisition of a second language.
Furthermore, Schmitt (2000:19) states that”….one of the key elements in learning a foreign language is mastering the L2’s vocabulary”. It is cleared that second pr foreign language learners should know, learn and master the vocabulary, so by having and learning vocabulary, it can help a learner understand the language easily.
- Identification of The Problem
The students of this school almost never got a good mark in English. Whereas, Vocabulary is one of the items that has to be mastered by the students in learning English, because no one can speak English if they have limited vocabulary and without a proportional amount of vocabulary anyone will get trouble in her reading, listening, speaking, writing. In a fact, there are some problems that are faced by the students. First, they only remember about the words or the names of the picture and the pictures themselves. it was difficult for them to answer the question because their vocabularies were very limited on the topic. Second, the students did not know about the meaning of the word. Third, the students did not want to open dictionary to find the meaning of the word. From the explanation above, the researcher hopes to find out that key terms finding strategy improves the students’ vocabulary mastery.

- How can key terms finding strategy improve the students’ vocabulary mastery?
- How is the students’ response when key terms finding strategy can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery?
- Objective of The Research
The objective of this research is to find out that key terms finding strategy improves the students’ vocabulary mastery and to know about the students’ response when key terms finding strategy can improve their vocabulary mastery.
